Trudeau’s Party wins election in Canada, but must not obtain majority – 21/09/2021 – World

Canada’s Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, is expected to remain in power and re-form a minority government after a fierce election dispute, the country’s news channels projected on Monday (20).

Polls showed that Liberals lead in 156 constituencies, based on the preliminary count, just one seat more than the party already held. The Canadian House has 338 seats and a party must win 170 to gain a majority.

Trudeau leads a government with a minority of seats in the House, and has the support of other parties to win legislative approval. The prime minister called an election two years ahead of the official calendar, hoping to secure the parliamentary majority, lost in 2019.

Conservatives are in second place, leading in 121 districts.

Polls reported results much more slowly than usual, with some stations forced to limit occupancy due to restrictions caused by the coronavirus. Long lines have forced some voters to wait hours to vote in southern Ontario, a critical battleground.

The Canadian dollar strengthened with the arrival of the first results, up 0.3%

Canada’s electoral court will not start counting around 800,000 mail ballots until Tuesday (21). These votes can be decisive for the outcome in at least two districts on the east coast of the country, where the dispute is fiercest, as well as in other districts in the interior of the country.
