Twenty states and DF meet to evaluate body cameras for police officers – 11/10/2021 – Panel

Representatives of security forces from 20 states and the Federal District will meet this Thursday (11) with the Secretary of Security of São Paulo, General João Camilo Pires, technicians from the ministry and the command of the Military Police in the state to meet and assess the use of body cameras by police officers.

Deaths due to police intervention showed a strong reduction in the PM-SP battalions using bodycams.

Now present in three states, the cameras in police uniforms are being studied for possible acquisition in almost the entire country, according to a survey carried out by the sheet.

Coupled to the uniform, the equipment is used to record the agents’ interventions in video and audio.

Last year, São Paulo started using 500 cameras, in the context of the “Olho Vivo” program, by João Doria (PSDB) administration. In June 2021, the project was expanded and another 2,500 cameras began to be used in 18 battalions, with a monthly cost of R$1.2 million.

The expectation is that by next year, more than 7,000 units will be tendered and added to the uniforms.

In the first two months of the expansion of the use of cameras, deaths due to police intervention showed a strong reduction in the state. In June, that index dropped to 22, the lowest record since May 2013.
