World news: US warns of sanctions if liberated regions join Russia | World news | News

The United States and its allies are ready to impose additional sanctions on Russia if the liberated Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as well as the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, enter it. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on September 23. The broadcast of the speech is available on YouTube.

“We will work with our allies and partners to impose additional, rapid and severe economic costs on Russia,” Jean-Pierre said.

She also added that the United States will never recognize referendums in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as well as in the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Borrell’s statement about referendums in Donbass devoid of objectivity and stated that referendums are held in accordance with international law.

On September 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the Russians, residents of the Donbass republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. He noted that Russia cannot but respond to the sincere desire of the inhabitants of these regions to determine their lives.

On February 24, Russia launched an operation to protect civilians in the Donbass. Moscow explained that the tasks of the special operation included the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, which is necessary to ensure the security of Russia.
